American Express Platinum Card Review 2026

American Express Platinum Card Review 2026: Fees, Rewards, Benefits & Eligibility

August 31, 2026 |

The American Express Platinum Card is a premium charge card designed for high-spending customers who value travel, luxury hotel benefits, airport lounge access, concierge services and premium lifestyle experiences.

Unlike a conventional credit card with a fixed credit limit, the Platinum Card comes with no pre-set spending limit. However, this does not mean unlimited spending. American Express evaluates transactions based on factors such as financial information, spending pattern, credit history and account history.

The card also comes with a substantial annual fee of ₹66,000 plus applicable taxes, so it is not a card that makes sense simply because it offers premium benefits.

The real question is whether you can use enough of those benefits to justify the cost.

Quick Answer

The American Express Platinum Card can be a strong choice for high-spending customers who regularly travel, stay at premium hotels, use airport lounges and value lifestyle services.

Its strongest benefits include access to the Global Lounge Collection, premium hotel programmes, Platinum Concierge, Membership Rewards points, travel benefits and selected lifestyle privileges. American Express currently advertises access to 1,550+ airport lounges across 140+ countries through its Global Lounge Collection.

However, the ₹66,000 annual fee plus taxes is significant. Therefore, this card is better suited to customers who can actively use its travel, hotel and lifestyle benefits rather than someone looking for a simple rewards card.

What Is the American Express Platinum Card?

The American Express Platinum Card is a premium charge card, rather than a conventional credit card.

This distinction is important.

American Express does not provide the card with a traditional pre-set credit limit. Instead, transactions are assessed based on factors such as your financial profile, spending pattern, credit record and account history.

This can provide considerable spending flexibility, but no pre-set spending limit does not mean unlimited spending.

The amount you can spend may vary depending on your circumstances and American Express’s approval of individual transactions.

For customers who regularly make large legitimate purchases, travel internationally or spend heavily on premium experiences, this structure can be useful.

Key Benefits of the American Express Platinum Card

1. Premium Travel & Airport Lounge Access

Airport lounge access is one of the major reasons customers consider the Platinum Card.

The American Express Global Lounge Collection currently provides access to more than 1,550 airport lounges across 140 countries and counting, subject to programme terms and individual lounge conditions.

The collection includes programmes such as:

  • Centurion Lounges
  • Priority Pass lounges
  • Domestic partner lounges
  • Selected international lounge partners

The card also provides complimentary Priority Pass membership for the basic Cardmember. The Priority Pass programme has specific rules regarding complimentary access, particularly for lounges inside and outside India, so cardholders should check the current terms before travelling.

For someone who travels frequently, lounge access alone can provide meaningful convenience.

2. Membership Rewards Points

The Platinum Card earns 1 Membership Rewards Point for every ₹40 spent on eligible purchases, excluding categories where points are not awarded under the applicable terms.

The card also offers:

  • Reward redemption through vouchers
  • Transfer options to participating airline and hotel programmes
  • Redemption against eligible card charges
  • Pay-with-points options
  • Additional reward opportunities through selected programmes

American Express states that Membership Rewards points can be transferred to participating frequent-flyer and hotel programmes, subject to the applicable programme conditions.

The value you receive from the points therefore depends heavily on how you redeem them.

3. 3X Rewards on Overseas Spending

One of the notable Platinum Card benefits is 3X Membership Rewards Points on overseas spending. American Express currently lists this as a key benefit of the card.

This can make the card more interesting for customers who regularly spend internationally.

However, overseas spending also attracts a foreign-currency transaction markup. American Express currently states a 3.5% foreign currency transaction markup, so customers should consider the complete transaction cost rather than looking only at the reward multiplier.

4. Welcome Benefit

The Platinum Card currently advertises a welcome benefit worth up to ₹60,000, with options including selected Taj Hotels, Luxe Gift Card and The Postcard Hotels & Resorts benefits.

The welcome benefit is subject to eligibility conditions.

American Express’s published terms state that the Cardmember needs to:

  • Pay the joining/annual fee
  • Spend ₹50,000 within the first 60 days
  • Make the qualifying spending on the primary card
  • Maintain the account in good standing

The exact reward options and terms should be checked at the time of application because welcome offers can change.

5. Renewal Benefit

The card also offers a renewal benefit.

American Express currently states that customers can receive a voucher worth up to ₹35,000 after completing a membership year and spending ₹20 lakh, subject to the applicable conditions and payment of the renewal fee.

This is particularly important when evaluating the card’s long-term value.

If you are already spending ₹20 lakh or more during a membership year, the renewal benefit can offset a substantial part of the annual fee.

If you are not, the economics of renewing the card become much less attractive.

6. Fine Hotels + Resorts Benefits

For customers who regularly stay at premium hotels, the Platinum Card provides access to the Fine Hotels + Resorts programme.

American Express currently advertises benefits worth up to ₹44,300 at participating properties, subject to the programme’s conditions.

Depending on the property and booking, benefits can include:

  • Daily breakfast for two
  • Room upgrade when available
  • 4 PM late checkout
  • Wi-Fi
  • A property-specific experience or credit

These benefits can be valuable, but they are most useful when you would already choose premium participating hotels.

7. The Hotel Collection

The Platinum Card also provides access to The Hotel Collection.

Depending on the property and applicable conditions, benefits can include an experience credit and room upgrade when available. American Express states that qualifying bookings require a minimum two-night stay.

This is another example of why the Platinum Card is primarily a lifestyle and travel product rather than a simple cashback card.

8. Platinum Concierge

Platinum Concierge is another major feature of the card.

The dedicated concierge service can assist with lifestyle and travel-related requests, including arrangements such as restaurant reservations, special occasions and other services. American Express describes the service as being available around the clock.

The value of concierge services is subjective.

For some customers, having a dedicated service that can help with difficult or time-consuming arrangements is genuinely useful.

For others, it may not be important enough to justify a premium annual fee.

9. Premium Golf Benefits

The Platinum Card also includes premium golf-related privileges.

American Express currently lists access to 30+ golf courses in India and 50+ international golf courses, along with professional lessons and other golf-related benefits, subject to programme terms.

This can add considerable value for customers who already play golf regularly.

For someone who does not use golf benefits, however, this should not be counted heavily when calculating the card’s value.

10. Dining & Lifestyle Benefits

The Platinum Card comes with a range of dining and lifestyle benefits.

Current American Express information includes benefits such as:

  • Dining offers
  • EazyDiner Prime membership
  • Selected restaurant discounts
  • Special events and experiences
  • Lifestyle subscriptions and offers

American Express currently lists EazyDiner Prime benefits and selected restaurant offers for Platinum Cardmembers, subject to terms and participating establishments.

There are also limited-period offers that can change during the year.

Therefore, customers should check the latest offer terms before assigning a fixed monetary value to these benefits.

American Express Platinum Card Rewards: Are They Good?

The Platinum Card is not primarily a cashback card.

Its rewards are more useful for customers who understand how to extract value from Membership Rewards points.

The standard earning structure is:

  • 1 Membership Rewards Point per ₹40 on eligible spending
  • 5 Membership Rewards Points per ₹100 on fuel
  • 3X Membership Rewards Points on overseas spending
  • Additional points through selected promotional programmes

American Express also offers Reward Xcelerator opportunities where eligible merchants can provide substantially higher reward multiples.

The important point is that the headline reward rate should not be considered in isolation.

The value of the Platinum Card depends on how you redeem the points and how much value you get from the card’s travel and lifestyle benefits.

American Express Platinum Card Fees

The current annual fee is:

₹66,000 + applicable taxes

This is one of the biggest factors to consider before applying.

Unlike a low-fee rewards card, the Platinum Card requires substantial annual usage to make financial sense.

A customer should calculate the expected value of:

  • Welcome benefit
  • Renewal benefit
  • Hotel benefits
  • Lounge access
  • Reward points
  • Concierge services
  • Golf benefits
  • Dining and lifestyle offers

before deciding whether the annual fee is justified.

Who Should Consider the American Express Platinum Card?

The card can make sense for:

Frequent International Travellers

If you regularly travel overseas, the lounge access, hotel benefits, travel services and overseas reward multiplier can be valuable.

High Spenders

Customers with substantial annual spending may be better positioned to justify the premium annual fee and unlock the renewal benefit.

Luxury Hotel Users

If you already spend on premium hotels, Fine Hotels + Resorts and The Hotel Collection can potentially provide meaningful additional value.

Customers Who Value Premium Services

Concierge, lifestyle experiences, golf benefits and exclusive events may appeal to customers who value convenience and premium experiences.

Customers Who Can Pay the Bill in Full

Because this is a charge card, the spending structure is different from a conventional revolving credit card. American Express states that its charge cards require the amount due to be paid in full at the end of the billing cycle.

Who Should Avoid the American Express Platinum Card?

This card may not be suitable if:

  • You want a low annual fee
  • You mainly want cashback
  • You rarely travel
  • You do not use premium hotels
  • You do not value airport lounges
  • You cannot comfortably meet the spending required for the renewal benefit
  • You prefer a conventional credit card with a fixed credit limit
  • You would struggle to pay the billed amount in full

In these situations, a lower-cost rewards, cashback or travel card may provide better value.

American Express Platinum Card Eligibility

American Express currently lists several eligibility requirements for the Platinum Card.

Applicants should generally:

  • Be over 18 years old
  • Have a good credit history with no payment defaults
  • Have a current residential address in India
  • Have an Indian or multinational bank savings/current account
  • Meet the applicable income requirement
  • Be an Indian resident as defined by the applicable rules

American Express currently lists personal annual income of ₹25 lakh or above for employed applicants and ₹15 lakh or above for self-employed applicants. Self-employed applicants also need to meet the stated business-history requirement.

American Express also currently restricts issuance to residents of specified cities, subject to its conditions. Applicants should verify the latest eligibility information before applying.

Is the American Express Platinum Card Worth It in 2026?

It can be — but only for the right customer.

The American Express Platinum Card is not a card that we would recommend simply because it has a long list of premium benefits.

The ₹66,000 annual fee is too high for that approach.

Instead, consider your actual spending and lifestyle.

If you frequently travel, stay at premium hotels, use airport lounges, spend internationally, enjoy dining and lifestyle experiences and can make use of the renewal benefit, the card can potentially deliver substantial value.

On the other hand, if your spending is moderate and you mainly want cashback or simple rewards, a lower-cost card is likely to be a more sensible choice.

Our Prabooz Verdict

Best for: High spenders, frequent travellers and customers who actively use premium travel and lifestyle benefits.

Not ideal for: Customers looking for a simple, low-cost rewards or cashback card.

Value rating: Depends heavily on how many premium benefits you actually use.

The biggest mistake would be to calculate the value of every advertised benefit and assume you will receive all of it.

A better approach is simple:

Count only the benefits you would genuinely use.

If those benefits comfortably justify the annual fee, the Platinum Card can make sense. If they do not, choose a lower-cost card instead.

Important Note

Credit card and charge-card fees, rewards, eligibility criteria, lounge access, welcome offers and other benefits can change.

The information in this review is based on American Express India information available at the time of writing. Always check the issuer’s latest terms and conditions before applying.

Prabooz recommends comparing the actual cost and benefits of a card with your own spending pattern rather than choosing a card based only on its premium features.
